Much of the organic matter in the sewage can be digested by aerobic bacteria in tanks such as these. The populations of bacteria are able to take a wide range of chemicals, even some household poisons, and break them down to carbon dioxide, water, and a few other simple substances. If this did not happen in sewage treatment, there would be a problem of eutrophication as too many nutrients would enter rivers near sewage works.
